EXPANDED HEALTH HAZARD ALERT: Certain BEST VALUE brand BEEF BURGER PRODUCTS may contain E. coli O157:H7 bacteria.


Ottawa, March 15, 2012.   EXPANDED HEALTH HAZARD ALERT: Certain BEST VALUE brand BEEF BURGER PRODUCTS may contain E. coli O157:H7 bacteria.

As part of an ongoing Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) investigation into E. coli in certain frozen beef products, CFIA and Giant Tiger Stores Limited are warning the public not to consume certain Best Value Beef Burger products, described below, because the products may be contaminated with E. coli O157:H7.

These products - manufactured by New Food Classics - have been distributed to Giant Tiger in Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Alberta and British Columbia ONLY.  All affected product has been completely removed in the west.  

The following Best Value brand products are included in this alert:
• 10 Beef Burgers 1 kg,  UPC 0 71212 88103 8,  LOT CODES 72991 EST 761, 82991 EST 761
• 20 Beef Burgers, 2 kg,  UPC 0 71212 88104 5,  LOT CODES 53011 EST 761, 63011 EST 761, 73011 EST 761, 83011 EST 761

New Food Classics does not supply Giant Tiger with Best Value Beef Burgers in the provinces of Ontario, Quebec, or the Maritimes.  However, the product packaging looks the same.  Therefore to avoid any confusion for our customers, Giant Tiger is voluntarily removing from its shelves all Best Value Beef Burger product nationally.

"Our customer’s safety is paramount and it is imperative to take immediate preventative action to respond to this situation promptly, diligently, and in the best interests of our customers," said Giant Tiger Stores Limited Senior Vice-President of Grocery Buying, Dave Burnside.  "We have a strong culture of food safety and we are taking every possible step to maintain our high standards for our customers’ well-being.”

Consumption of food contaminated with E.coli may cause illness. Elderly, the very young, pregnant women and people with weakened immune systems are particularly at risk.  If you have any concerns, please seek medical advice..

Giant Tiger will accept returns of any Best Value Beef Burgers if customers have a concern.
